Teach him the very basic abedience command of 'sit'..EVERY time he barks, make him 'sit'..Soon he will make the connection that barking is not such fun, as he always has to obey a command.

Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup's nose, gently rest your right hand on pup's rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you don't want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. then take a play break and move on to something else.
very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

How can I stop my one year old Pooch snapping at people and other dogs?.?
I have smacked her but it doesn't make any difference.
Could it be that I had her spayed before her first Heat?

snapping and biting is usually unrelated to a dog being spayed. Is your dog a nervous dog or a dominant one? as either of these could be the problem. If it is a dominant dog then it can be easily rectified with simple re-training of the dogs position in the household. Not letting it on furniture..ignoring it when she asks for your attention, restricting acces to certain parts of the house. If it is nervous aggression then it needs to see a behavioural counsellor as it is very hard to break the cycle. In the meantime..take your dog to training classes and when out muzzle the dog. If she goes to show any agression..make her sit and pay attention to you.if she does this give her a treat..this sort of behaviour could end up getting your dog put to sleep..so it needs sorting now before it gets worse..what if she bites a child? theres no going back from that..and dont smack her..if you smack her when she is near people for the behaviour..she will associate these people with her getting smacked..so will ultimately re-inforce her behaviour. Get some behavioural advice immediately

Act as her leader by protecting her from these situations she cannot deal with. Over time she will learn to trust that you will deal with the situation for her and she doesn't need to take action.
In the meantime you need to build on distraction techniques. Does she have a favourite toy or do treats make her tick? Everytime you pass some one or a dog get her attention with the toy or by holding a treat and walk on by. When she successfully passes the person praise her. Use the same method if a dog approaches her. Call her away and reward her for responding to you. Move away from the other dog. I know some dogs can be persistant and hassle your dog but persevere, this problem will take time to improve.
Take her to group training classes (speak with the instructor first so that she can be around other dogs and people while learning to focus on you.
You dont mention if she is snapping at visitors to your home or people she already knows. Maybe you could elaborate on the situations when she snaps for more specific advice.

Failing that, book yourself and her into some training classes. She needs to be socialised. Of course it means that everyone in the class will see just how thick you are, probably less intelligent than the dog you own, but you have a chance to redeem yourself and learn something about how to train your dog. My partner and I and moving house this week and the new back yard is beautiful and my dogs totally ruined the old house back yard how can i stop them before they ruin my new back yard?? please help!

If they are digging or chewing it's because they are bored and have lots of energy and they have nothing to do. So they create something to do themselves which is always not what the owner wants. You should exercises your dog at a minimum of at least 45 minutes a day. take them for a walk, play fetch, something. You can even train them something like roll over, etc. so they are also mentally drained. "A tired dog is a good dog."
well for starters put just a little bit of Vinegar in their water and when they pee they will not kill everything. You don't need much just about a teaspoon or so. As far as digging and such you will just have to train them somehow.
Section off the backyard for the dogs can go. so they don't ruin the yard. You can put a dog house with a fence so they can't go on the nice part of the yard.

If you love your landscaping more than your dogs, then say bye bye to your animals. otherwise, accept that dogs will be dogs or re-landcape your yard with more hard-scape and less destroyable materials. If you got the money, talk to a landscaper about pet friendly landscaping or dedicate a part of the yard to the animals, fence it off,and leave it to them.

Cesers Mom 2 hit the nail on the head. I have a husky mix, a lab, and one of their kids. All 3 have a digging problem, thanks to the husky mix, so I fenced off an area for them in one part of the yard is theirs to dig in, and I keep moist for them to lay in. They don't bother the rest of the yard.

keep the nails well trimmed, it could be that they are brittle, acting like human nails do. my dogs nails done this until she was fully grown. make sure to wash your dogs feet if they get muddy also, if the split gets too bad and goes to the quick the last thing you need is mud in it and for it to get infected. try using some fish oil in its food, not only will it help with nails it also works wonders for the coat and joints.

Thats a new one. I would try some type of thick lotion and or maybe an oil. If they are splitting they are probably dry. If it hurts to much take him to the vet.

And don't feel bad if there IS an accident; I know how to trim animals' nails, and have ended up with many accidents due to them jerking their feet and such.
Walk the dog on the pavement to strengthen the nails, and talk to your vet about what you can give her as far as supplements. You want to be careful with them because she's still a puppy..so there may be different formulations. And too much calcium can bind a dog up. So just call the vet and ask:)

Its quite simple really.
Dogs are descended from pack animals. and sometimes the pack hierarchy can change. You need to let your demented doggy know this.
It may be best to let your boyfriend take the task upon himself. since he is effectively taking over the role of alpha male now. and it is therefore his responsibility in doggy terms to put the lesser male in his place.
If he doesn't want to do that though, or you'd rather sort it yourself. it may be more difficult. The method is essentially the same though:
You can achieve the desired aim by baring your teeth a little and pulling a slightly hostile face if he does something you don't want him to. If that isn't enough. growling a little might get the point across. Let him know that he has been demoted and that you won't tolerate any nonsense from him. The more he goes against your wishes, the more aggressive you need to get. Sooner or later he will get the point. and woefully accept his place downstairs.
Chances are by this point he will be downhearted about it.
Sudden displays of affection at this point could ruin all your hard work. You need to let him know his place. and make sure that he knows your boyfriend is the alpha male now, and thus your favoured. Many dogs suffer seperation anxiety and do not like to be alone. Maybe shutting your bedroom door, if you choose not to move the dogs bed, next to yours. We have two boxers who sleep on the bed with us, and we have to kick them off just to get a decent nights sleep, once in a while, but usually by morning they are back up on the foot of the bed. having said all that both our boys now sleep on the bed although jet likes to sleep in his own bed sometimes and the new boy is a regular on the sofa, we felt we love our boys and if there happy we are happy

I know she has tackled this problem before, I believe by giving the dog treats when he uses his bed as well as other training methods. So I suggest you get her book because you'll probably find you'll need to try a couple of methods before finding the one that works for you.

It may be best to let your boyfriend take the task upon himself. since he is effectively taking over the role of alpha male now. and it is therefore his responsibility in doggy terms to put the lesser male in his place.
If he doesn't want to do that though, or you'd rather sort it yourself. it may be more difficult. The method is essentially the same though:
You can achieve the desired aim by baring your teeth a little and pulling a slightly hostile face if he does something you don't want him to. If that isn't enough. growling a little might get the point across. Let him know that he has been demoted and that you won't tolerate any nonsense from him. The more he goes against your wishes, the more aggressive you need to get. Sooner or later he will get the point. and woefully accept his place downstairs.
Chances are by this point he will be downhearted about it.
Sudden displays of affection at this point could ruin all your hard work. You need to let him know his place. and make sure that he knows your boyfriend is the alpha male now, and thus your favoured. I had the same trouble with a leaf rake (he still tries to kill it) and used to be just as bad with a broom.
He's over the broom thing but when I use the rake outside he goes ape! My other dog (who is blind) gets very cross at him attacking the rake and chases him away.
Sometimes I offer him the rake, introduction type action, and after one bite of it he just waits for me to start raking again.
I think it's the noise of it.
About the broom, he's overe that now and just watches and I did the same thing with it. Offered it to him. Could work, could be the other dog, could be noise, I really don't know but it's not uncommon.

Try playing with the dog when the hoover is on. Sit on/next to the hoover, but keep the dogs attention on your self. That way the hoover isn't just the monster taken out of the closet once a week, that takes all your attention and gives the dog just yelling and commands.
Put the dog in the kitchen whilst doing the hoovering. It could be that it is frightened of the noise. My dog doesn't like it either.
First, you need to get a clicker.
Then introduce the clicker by getting the dog to either sit, stay or do anything good and click, then give the dog a treat. The dog will associate the clicker to mean good things.
At the moment, your dog associates the hoover to mean bad things, you need to change his/her opinion of it
Get someone else in the room.
You need to take the dogs attention by clicking and giving him a treat a few times - make sure you are kneeling down at his level,
then bring the hoover into the room, if he goes for it, do not move.
Wait for him to come back to you by calling him calmly. when he does, click and give him a treat.
then slowly work your way up by plugging the hoover in (getting someone else to do it while you stay where you are)
continue clicking and giving treats if he ignores it or when his attention comes back to you.
then turn the hoover on and follow the same process until he is ok.
This worked on my dog. you can buy a clicker from pet shops - if not then they will be able to tell you where, otherwise search online, they are not more that a few pounds.
Hope thi is ok. It might take a bit of time but always stay calm and he will get the message eventually that the hoover is good - as long as the dog thinks the clicker is a good thing - make sure you introduce it to him well in advance and praise him for everything good he does by clicking and giving him a small treat.
when you take him for walks, keep a handful of dog treats on you.

From your question, I gather that you dog is not a young dog and is used to using your toilet's as it's toilet. So, it has had this habit for a long time and it will be difficult to change it. You will need to be patient. Here are my suggestions.
1) Your dog smells pee and poo in the toilet (both his and yours). First thing is to reduce or minimise the smell. The earlier suggests of bleach PLUS pepper is a good start.
2) If you have an upstairs toilet (to which he does not have access) and you use that instead, that will also reduce the smell in the downstairs toilet.
3) Shutting the toilet door might help. However, he is likely to just start doing it elsewhere in the house, which might be even worse.
4) The problem is that he believes that the toilet area is the area to pee and poo. You need to retrain him that outside is the proper area to do this. Given his age, this will likely take some time.
5) I would advise against punishing him. He will know that he did something wrong but won't understand what you want. Reward works better.
6) I would suggest that you watch for when he does his business in the bathroom. Soon as he starts, immediately take him outside. If he does his business outside, then praise and reward him. Have a keyword (e.g. "PEE") which you use at this time. Whenever he does his business outside (even if it is while walking), IMMEDIATELY praise him and use the keyword.
7) The use of a CLICKER as positive reinforcement can be helpful.
8) To summarise the above, the secret is to:
a) Get him to do his business outside, using whatever tricks are neccessary. If you have to feed him a big meal and then take him for a walk in order to make this happen, do it. But until he does his buiness outside, you can't progress.
b) As soon as he does his business outside, tons of praise and positive reinforcement, and the keyword.
c) Eventually he will associate peeing outside with praise. Also, he will learn to pee outside on command (given you more opportunity to give positive reinforcement).
9) Once he has learned that going outside is right, you can then start discouraging him from doing the business inside. When he does the business inside, a sharp NO, followed by taking him outside. However, until he has learned that going ouside is the right thing, punishing him for doing the wrong thing is unfair and counter-productive.

i had the same prob. and i went across my bathroom with bleach to get their smell out of it, and then i only feed them when i am home, i do leave water out for them but i will let them out several times a day and i haven't had the prob. since unless i am gone all day and evening
u could try the can dog food if u haven't, most dogs love it and if he does like it then mix it in with dry dog food
Simply do not allow him in there anymore. and if he does it anywhere else, act very disappointed and drop it. you can also try making him sleep in there. they don't like to do their duty where they sleep.
if he isn't eating dog food, what is he eating? don't give him a choice. give him the amount reccommended for his weight at the same time every day, and take it away after an hour. he'll learn that it's time to eat. If he does not eat, try the vet.
Put him in the backyard
Try giving him cat food! That's how my grandpa's dog is.

I do not know if you can order a single copy or not. If not check with your local shelter to see if you can obtain one from them. It is a GREAT training tool. To better answer your question it would help to know what kind of dog and what kind of food you are trying to feed him or her. First off if you are feeding cheap dog food STOP! It may say 100% Nutrition, BUT. The filler they use in the cheaper dog food goes right through a dogs system. So it's worth the extra money to get good food such as nutrimax or science diet. It will ultimately improve your dogs stool, and may just help them control their bowel movements easier. Also how long does the dog have to stay in the bathroom? If it has to stay there for along time then you surely can't expect him or her to hold it for say 8 hours? In that case I would buy a kennel crate with enough room for your size dog, and crate train him or her. At any rate good luck, and if you can try to pick up the DVD. You will love it.

I have the answers for both of your questions..first the food..I have what I called a very fussy dog wouldnt eat anything so what I did was brought some good quality dried dog food.I found purina is the best also buy some gravy granuals (bisto) make a little gravy with 1 tspoon of granuals and a little hot water, then add a little cold water to get the right temp make sure its warm and not cold, .if your dog is next to you she will be really interested,leave for a few minutes so it just soaks but not completely soaked in.
right now for the weeing..at pet shops or diy stores they sell pepper dust, completely scrub the bathroom floor with a solution of bleach, when dry sprinkle the pepper dust where your dog normally goes, you will only need to leave the pepper dust down for a couple of day till your dog gets the hint, he only goes there as he has 'marked his spot' if you see your dog going to the bathroom clap your hands loudly to make him look at you then take him outside..hey presto..no more poo or wee.This does work.. trust me!!
You should start going in the garden. You should also start eating dog food.
I had a rescue dog that would only drink out of the toilet because this was the only place he had ever found water. It took a long time for him to trust me but over time he learnt that he was going to be looked after properly. Dogs have a long memory and abused dogs aren't very quick to trust. Don't get to cross with it, maybe something simple as just keeping the door closed will encourage it not to relieve itself in the bathroom. Does it have easy access to outside? And always leave his food in the same place for it to be found when needed. Good luck and don't give up ~ it will be worth it in the end.

3) Shutting the toilet door might help. However, he is likely to just start doing it elsewhere in the house, which might be even worse.
4) The problem is that he believes that the toilet area is the area to pee and poo. You need to retrain him that outside is the proper area to do this. Given his age, this will likely take some time.
5) I would advise against punishing him. He will know that he did something wrong but won't understand what you want. Reward works better.
6) I would suggest that you watch for when he does his business in the bathroom. Soon as he starts, immediately take him outside. If he does his business outside, then praise and reward him. Have a keyword (e.g. "PEE") which you use at this time. Whenever he does his business outside (even if it is while walking), IMMEDIATELY praise him and use the keyword.
7) The use of a CLICKER as positive reinforcement can be helpful.
8) To summarise the above, the secret is to:
a) Get him to do his business outside, using whatever tricks are neccessary. If you have to feed him a big meal and then take him for a walk in order to make this happen, do it. But until he does his buiness outside, you can't progress.
b) As soon as he does his business outside, tons of praise and positive reinforcement, and the keyword.
c) Eventually he will associate peeing outside with praise. Also, he will learn to pee outside on command (given you more opportunity to give positive reinforcement).
9) Once he has learned that going outside is right, you can then start discouraging him from doing the business inside. When he does the business inside, a sharp NO, followed by taking him outside. However, until he has learned that going ouside is the right thing, punishing him for doing the wrong thing is unfair and counter-productive.

i had the same prob. and i went across my bathroom with bleach to get their smell out of it, and then i only feed them when i am home, i do leave water out for them but i will let them out several times a day and i haven't had the prob. since unless i am gone all day and evening
u could try the can dog food if u haven't, most dogs love it and if he does like it then mix it in with dry dog food
Simply do not allow him in there anymore. and if he does it anywhere else, act very disappointed and drop it. you can also try making him sleep in there. they don't like to do their duty where they sleep.
if he isn't eating dog food, what is he eating? don't give him a choice. give him the amount reccommended for his weight at the same time every day, and take it away after an hour. he'll learn that it's time to eat. If he does not eat, try the vet.
Put him in the backyard
Try giving him cat food! That's how my grandpa's dog is.

Keep your dog out of the bathroom
Here is my advice to you as an Animal Control Officer. The first thing I would recommend is purchasing this DVD. http://www.petsincredible.com/productdet. I do not know if you can order a single copy or not. If not check with your local shelter to see if you can obtain one from them. It is a GREAT training tool. To better answer your question it would help to know what kind of dog and what kind of food you are trying to feed him or her. First off if you are feeding cheap dog food STOP! It may say 100% Nutrition, BUT. The filler they use in the cheaper dog food goes right through a dogs system. So it's worth the extra money to get good food such as nutrimax or science diet. It will ultimately improve your dogs stool, and may just help them control their bowel movements easier. Also how long does the dog have to stay in the bathroom? If it has to stay there for along time then you surely can't expect him or her to hold it for say 8 hours? In that case I would buy a kennel crate with enough room for your size dog, and crate train him or her. At any rate good luck, and if you can try to pick up the DVD. You will love it.

I have the answers for both of your questions..first the food..I have what I called a very fussy dog wouldnt eat anything so what I did was brought some good quality dried dog food.I found purina is the best also buy some gravy granuals (bisto) make a little gravy with 1 tspoon of granuals and a little hot water, then add a little cold water to get the right temp make sure its warm and not cold, .if your dog is next to you she will be really interested,leave for a few minutes so it just soaks but not completely soaked in.
right now for the weeing..at pet shops or diy stores they sell pepper dust, completely scrub the bathroom floor with a solution of bleach, when dry sprinkle the pepper dust where your dog normally goes, you will only need to leave the pepper dust down for a couple of day till your dog gets the hint, he only goes there as he has 'marked his spot' if you see your dog going to the bathroom clap your hands loudly to make him look at you then take him outside..hey presto..no more poo or wee.This does work.. trust me!!
You should start going in the garden. You should also start eating dog food.
I had a rescue dog that would only drink out of the toilet because this was the only place he had ever found water. It took a long time for him to trust me but over time he learnt that he was going to be looked after properly. Dogs have a long memory and abused dogs aren't very quick to trust. Don't get to cross with it, maybe something simple as just keeping the door closed will encourage it not to relieve itself in the bathroom. Does it have easy access to outside? And always leave his food in the same place for it to be found when needed. Good luck and don't give up ~ it will be worth it in the end.
He probably got hit for shi.tting all over the place. Do what I do to train a dog, just beat them to within an inch of there life. Then be all nice to them, they will be so confused they will be good. I trained this old ladies little dog but went to far and had to dump it in the river in a sack I told the woman it ran away. Close your bathroom door, but you may find that has been where he has been before, it is difficault when you get a dog that has been treated wrong in the past! Have you tried pedigree dog meat and mixing a bit on chicken or ham through it? Or using a stock cube to flavour dried dog meal! Sometimes if my puppy is not interested in her dinner i make a little gravy and pour it over. Good Luck xx
