how to get rid of pet fleas in the home?

Answers:
We had this problem - our cats are pretty flea-free - but a stray came in through the cat flap while we were away on holiday (the flap was locked but the little horror was seen pushing it until it burst open).

It made itself quite at home and managed to infest our lounge and cats rather well - discovered when we saw a handful of fleas jumping around on a soft-rug.

It was a really cold time of year too - so the heating was on which they also love.

So - how we got rid (vets advice);

- turned heating off to chill the house which makes the fleas more dormant,
- bathe and comb all cats then Frontline them.
- dump every loose fitting or put through washing machine on a high temp wash.
- hoover the place through a few times - including sofa, curtains, behind and under furniture.
- wash all bedding in bedrooms and any coats, etc, that are near the area affected.
- mop all solid floors.
- buy some of the 'flea-bombs' from the big pets stores and then make sure things in the room that need treating are in place and the cats are out.
- close curtains, place flea-bombs onto saucers (we did 4 has we have a large lounge), close windows, etc, and light them and go out for a while as they stink and probably don't do humans much good!
- on return hoover the place over and over.

This worked for us - problem now contained to just the odd flea on our cats who are Frontlined and collared and their bedding washed weekly.

Good luck!
You have fleas as pets?
spray the house with flea killer or fumagate if iots really bad!!
you have to first treat the pet then spray the home
best way is to go the vets and by Front Line
You will have to get someone in to exterminate them I am afraid, its the only way, as they breed very quickly and spread, you need the whole house fumigating.
1. try dusting with baking soda leave for 1 -3 hours vacuum.
2. Put Dawn or Joy dishwashing in a bowl, pkace bowl in a corner of the romm for part of a day dispose of dead fleas
i use product which the spelling diatamish in my home you purchase at the ace hardward or any vet clinc
treat your animal then treat your house. A powder you sprinkle on your carpet leave for half a hour then hoover up will work wonders!
Take them to your local humane society where they can be adopted out to new homes. Oh, and make sure it's a no-kill facility first. That's the only way I know of to get rid of "pet" fleas. Uh..otherwise get some Advatage from your vet and use it on your dog and/or cat (you can't use all brands on both dogs and cats)
Contact your local council and enquire about fumagation! They spray your house and it gets rid of them. Sometimes people get this problem when they move into a new property. The fleas lay dormant in the heating system and when new occupiers move in and switch on the heating the nasty fleas come out to play and feed off occupants blood. Yuk!
Get rid of the dog
Hi Kaz
Its easy just go to your local pet store and buy the home spray for fleas and that will soon get rid of them. After a while you just hoover them up. Dump the hoover bag
fumeagate it
i tried every thing i could buy from all the stores to do my house and my yard. they were so bad. finally the man at the store told me to contact a pest control service and just bite the bullet. i had already spent over a $ 100.00 and nothng had worked. So i did just that. I contacted the pest control service signed the contract and payed the money and they came out several times the first month. and now they come out every month and after the first month my house and yard was fles free.
why would you have gotten a flea for a pet in the first place if you just want to get rid of it. you should have thought of the consequences of getting a pet first. think how the poor fleas will feel now that you just want to abondon them. .
Hello kaz
With 2 sprays
1 for your dog,cat and you can buy both in any pet store.
2 one for your house and after a while you just hoover up
With a consistent, monthly treatment using Frontline or Advantage. And keeping the floor vacuumed, sheets washed, etc.
Hi Kaz, I have the same problem. As soon as I see my female dog scratching I give her a bath with Dawn liquid soap. While she is in the tub my sons will put a powder on the carpet %26 then vacuum everything, couch cover will be changed.
During summer months I let her go swimming @ the beach, also she tends to get sand fleas summer months .One reason why I let her be washed often. Good luck
Ask your vet about nouvan stay kill, its a spray you spray before you go out for the day or before bedtime, doesn't leave any sticky residue and quite pleasant on the nose, anything of the flea verity touches where you have sprayed over the next six months or so will quickly die, it is very good stuff as i have used it myself a while back, its not cheep though. Hope this helps.
