My puppy has parvo and we just noticed it. Unfortunaltly there are no 24 hour vets in our area and he is lathargic, won't eat, won't drink, and has diareaha. We are giving him pedialite and gatorade and he throws it all up, so I wanted to know how can I keep him alive until Monday morning until I can get him to the vet in the morning? Please help I do not want to lose my puppy he is only 3 months old and we love him so much and I am scared because it is not looking good. Please help! Thanks.
Answers:
Get a human baby medicine shooter. You can get them from grocery stores. Use that to get fluids in him. Even if he throws up, keep doing it. A little will stay down and keep him alive.
Use Pedialyte water and meat baby food watered down to liquid. If the pup won't open his mouth, squirt the liquid in the back of his mouth on the outside of his teeth.
Make sure he swallows and don't let him suck any into his lungs.
Good luck.
PS. You should be prepared to do this every hour or so thu the night. Dehydration is what kills the little guys and it kills quickly.
Now you know why vaccines should start at 2 months of age. You will be wiser next time.
get your puppy some pedialite, the stuff for babys. it works really good for them. it saved my dogs life once. and i told someone on here about it once, she said it helped her dog. good luck.
THAT WON'T WORK GET YOUR PUPPY TO AN EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL BECAUSE PARVO TAKES A PUPPY QUICK.
Call the vets in your area and ask them to see your dog because it is an emergency! What about your own vet? Has he even seen one? Has he had any of his shots? It is much cheaper and easier to protect against a doisease like parvo than to cure it. If you wait until Monday, your dog will die.
honey.FIND a vet NOW. your puppy will not last that long. Parvo is a super fast killer. please take him somewhere now. he needs meds fast.
good luck
You need to find a 24 hour vet clinic and make a long drive if need be. You decide, your dog's life or a long drive to a vet clinic in another city. To me its a no brainer. You took the responsibility of a pet, do whats right and find a vet clinic in another city and make the drive.
don't take any chances, get the pup to a vet, any vet. your puppy will surley die. parvo is nothing to mess with, it is always deadly, unless a vet intercedes with medical procedures.
Aww I hate that, I know that sometimes if you call a few around in your area vets that is some will be on call all hours of the night.
Good luck I hope someone answers your questions.
Maybe the link below will help you find something also.
take him to the emeergency vet in your area NOW!
most vets have emergency line you can call or get another vet.
how do you know its Parvo?? waiting this long if it is will be the end of your puppy.. or it will surely hamper his chances.
Parvo has a very nasty smell.. are you sure its not just upset tummy or food problems??
always always vaccinate any puppy - infact you should NEVER get an unvaccinated puppy..
if this guy has Parvo you need to be aware you can spread it to other dogs or other areas so be extra careful.. bleach your shoes before you go anywhere. and you will need to clean EVERYTHING in your home/yard
He should have been vaccinated by his age.he should have had 3 of the 4 round series. Anyways.try the unflavored pedialyte. You may want to find the closest emergency vet bc a pup with parvo can go down fast.and I can't tell you that it can wait until monday if he has parvo, bc he probably won't.
There are emergency clinics for pets. Call your vets number and there should be a recorded message that tells you what to do in emergencies. Also you could call the shelter and ask them where there is an emergency clinic you could take your puppy. Don't wait until Monday or you most likely will lose your puppy. Try looking in the yellow pages for emergency clinics for pets if the other suggestions fail. The best one is call the vets number and listen to the message.
This happened with a puppy of mine and we were able to bring her through it.
We forced pepto bismol down her throat with one of those bulbs you use on babies. We kept ice cubes in front of her so that she could lick the moisture.
Pedialyte is good and if your puppy likes the icecubes, freeze the unflavored Pedialyte.
You may have to keep force feeding the liquids until you get your dog to the vet.
I'm so sorry and I feel for you, I've lost dogs to parvo before and it's very heartwretching. Good luck.
Go to your local store and buy some pedia lite because it will put fluids back into the puppys body. Do this all through the night. Dont give too much at once. Use a eye dropper to give it to your puppy. This is what you need to do until you get the puppy to the vet. As soon as you can get the puppy to the vet it is vital.
you need an emergency clinic even if you have to drive mine had it on the 4th of july like 2 yrs ago and i got him to the vet on the very first day he was hospitalized for 3 days and even after that i thought for sure he wasnt gona make it but he pulled thru thats my little miracle it is the most deadly disease so go now and i do mean now if you wait till monday he is for sure a goner
How do you know it is parvo? I mean this seriously by the way, I wouldn't know if it was my dog.
Is it possible that he might have eaten something poisionous instead?
My dog was really sick about 3-4 weeks back and had all the signs you mentioned that lasted about 4 days and when I took him to the vets on day 2 they tested him, gave him some antibiotics, told me to feed him rice mixed with this Medi-Calåº Canine Gastro Formula. The vet figured he ate something he shouldn't have, but other then that was fine.
I would really look in the phone book, there has to be an emergency vet office somewhere near where you live, even if its a farm vet.. someone to help you and your furry little guy.
Goodluck and keep us informed :)
I'm so sorry dear. When a dog shows signs of parvo, it is usually too late to save them. He apparently didn't have the parvo vaccination. If a dog doesn't get vaccinated and is exposed to parvo, such as in the yard, he will usually pass on. Again, I'm sorry. I suggest if you get another puppy, have him vaccinated before you bring him home. Parvo lives in yards for years.
Your puppy can't wait until Monday. Have you called your vet to see if there is an emergency number referred on their answering machine? If your vet doesn't take emergencies then look for one in the area that does. You just can't wait on this one as home remedies won't keep your pup okay until Monday morning I'm afraid.
Vaccination is your best defense against parvo in a puppy, but unfortunately, it is not a guarantee that your puppy won't get it. There are certain circumstances that can still pass it on, like if your pup eats the droppings of a dog that was infected. I had a puppy that got it this very way and is when the vet told me how it can still be contracted. My puppy was entirely up to date on all of her shots. Fortunately for her, we got her in at the first signs of not being her active self and she pulled thru, but most do not if medical treatment isn't gotten ASAP.
what does your vet leave as an "on call" stand in? this pup will die before monday without fluids. DRIVE !!?
Before I continue I should say that I don't believe in all this holistic "junk". I prefer modern medicine, however I have seen this stuff do some awesome work with friends dogs and would recommend it to anyone.

OK hope to God you can find something in this that will help. Everyone should keep a bottle of this stuff on hand.
You say you love your puppy, but have you ever taken it to a vet? Did you know anything about puppies when you brought it home? Anything at all?
And why wait until Monday. You wouldn't wait until Monday to see a doctor if you had ebola. which kills about the same percentage of people as untreated parvo does of dogs.
Seriously, any vet would tell you the dog needed parvo shots, and why. Did you ignore a vets advice, or buy a new puppy and not even talk to a vet?
Either way, you should be making a spay appointment soon. Your own.
Force feed with water constantly my daughters dog had parvo it survived.
Ambertech sells a product called Parvaid. They also have a recipe on their site to make for the pup until their product arrives. Go read the recipe. It is home things to keep the pup hydrated. This will help until Monday.

Parvo is a killer and it kills fast. Find a vet NOW!
I worked for a vet, we saw a lot of puppies with Parvo. Most of them had never been vaccinated. It's very sad because even with hospitalization, they don't all make it. There is nothing that you can do at home to help your puppy, he needs to get to a vet ASAP and be hospitalized.
He needs IV fluids, he isn't going to be able to eat or drink. He needs medications and vitamins, and you aren't able to give him the care he is going to need to make it through this.
Parvo is extremely contagious so don't allow any other dogs (especially puppies) around him or your home. You will have to thoroughly clean and disinfect your home before you bring him (or any other puppies) home..
Time is extremely important, he needs all the help he can get (from a vet) and he needs it now. I wish you all the best and hope he pulls through.
