I am considering adopting a 7 mo old german shep mix who is extremely shy due to neglect. any adivse-books?
Answers:
i have a friend who just adopted a 7 month old german shephard/ husky mix, and he was very timid at first. She spent alot of time with him, and was always loving on him. Patience is majorly a factor here, and even if they piss you off you need to maintain a level tone. she also found a puppy who was about his same age (my six month old rotty) and let them play. we always played games with them, like fetch, and he slowly built up some confidence. Now he is much more confident and loving, although sometimes he still acts really withdrawn in new situations. Just be patient. that's all i can say. Love can change everyone around, and the same applies for dogs.
Read Cesar's Way by Ceasar Millan -- its as good as it gets for dog rehabilitation -- traditional obedience training is good, but he's in the field of dog psychology.
one ansewr whole series of books that have every dog breed:Terra-Nova
Search German shepard mix on the computer
I don't have any advice, but I'd like to say thank you for adopting a pet in need. :)
I am fostering a Shepherd mix, probably less than a year old. The answer is love and patience. It was three days before she'd let me touch her or take a treat. Now after about three weeks she sleeps in my bed and pokes me with her nose when she wants something. She's still pretty shy with strangers. I think this is a psychological thing rather than a training thing. Before you can get her to do anything you have to get her to trust you and want to please you. No sudden moves. Sit at her level (on a stool or stair) and talk to her. Reward and praise her whenever she makes a move toward trusting you. Make her feel safe. Let her be in the room with you whether in a crate or loose. Be willing to take some time.
Congrats on your new family member! The best advice I can give you I have never found in books.love her/him..cuddle him/her..it's all about the affection and love and patience.
There are several good books about behavior and also shelter dogs that might help you. Check at dogwise.com
